Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)
The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. Mediavine Partners (companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor’s referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.

Information collected
- Comments and ratings (if you leave one): name, email address, website (optional), comment, rating, IP address, and browser details, used to publish comments and prevent spam. Published comments show your name and website. Profile pictures come from Gravatar (Automattic), which receives a hashed version of your email address.
- Analytics: Google Analytics collects information such as pages visited, time on the site, the referring site, device and browser type, and approximate location, to show how the site is used.
- Advertising: see the Mediavine section above.
- Newsletter (if you subscribe): the newsletter runs on Substack, which collects your email address. Stripe processes payments for paid subscriptions. The site owner receives subscribers’ email addresses and email activity information. Substack’s privacy policy also applies.
- Hosting: BigScoots (hosting) and Cloudflare (content delivery, security, and comment spam checks) process technical information such as IP address and browser type.
Legal bases (Europe and the UK)
Comments, spam prevention, and hosting: legitimate interests in operating and securing the site. Analytics and personalized advertising: consent. Newsletter: providing the subscription you requested.
US privacy
Under some US state privacy laws, the advertising on this site may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. You can opt out using the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link on this site. This site does not respond to “Do Not Track” browser signals.
Retention
- Comments: while they remain on the site.
- Google Analytics: according to its retention settings (currently 2 months for event data and 14 months for user data).
- Newsletter: until removed from the subscriber list.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information; to object to or restrict its use; to withdraw consent; to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information; and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
